Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is a scenic wildlife destination in northern Tanzania, famous for its tree-climbing lions, large elephant herds, diverse birdlife, and the beautiful alkaline Lake Manyara.

A beautiful and diverse wildlife destination in northern Tanzania, located at the foot of the dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment. Although relatively small compared with some of Tanzania’s larger parks, Lake Manyara offers an impressive variety of landscapes, from lush groundwater forests and open grasslands to wetlands, woodland, and the seasonal waters of Lake Manyara itself. The park is particularly famous for its large elephant herds and tree-climbing lions, which are sometimes spotted resting on the branches of acacia and other trees. Visitors can also encounter giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, baboons, monkeys, warthogs, and several species of antelope. The diverse habitats create opportunities for different wildlife experiences within a relatively compact area. Lake Manyara is also an excellent destination for bird lovers. The lake and surrounding wetlands attract a remarkable variety of waterbirds, while the forests and grasslands provide habitats for many other species. Depending on the season, visitors may see flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons, eagles, and numerous smaller birds throughout the park. Beyond wildlife viewing, the park offers spectacular scenery. The towering Rift Valley escarpment provides a dramatic backdrop, while the forested areas create a completely different atmosphere from the open plains found in other northern Tanzania safari destinations. Game drives through the park allow travelers to experience these changing landscapes while searching for wildlife. Lake Manyara is an excellent addition to a northern Tanzania safari, particularly for travelers who want to combine wildlife, birdwatching, scenic landscapes, and a taste of the diverse ecosystems found across Tanzania. Its convenient location also makes it a popular stop when traveling between Arusha, Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti.
