Tarangire National Park

A spectacular safari destination in northern Tanzania, famous for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, diverse wildlife, and the seasonal Tarangire River

One of northern Tanzania’s most distinctive safari destinations, famous for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, diverse wildlife, and beautiful seasonal landscapes. Located south of the main safari route from Arusha toward Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, Tarangire offers an authentic wilderness experience with a quieter atmosphere and spectacular scenery. The park takes its name from the Tarangire River, an important source of water for wildlife, particularly during the dry season. As water becomes scarce across the surrounding landscape, large numbers of animals gather around the river and other remaining water sources. This seasonal concentration creates excellent opportunities for close wildlife encounters and photography. Tarangire is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, warthogs, impalas, and numerous antelope species. The park is also known for several less commonly encountered species, including greater kudu, gerenuk, and fringe-eared oryx. With hundreds of recorded bird species, Tarangire is also an excellent destination for birdwatching. One of the park's most recognizable features is its enormous baobab trees, which rise dramatically above the golden grasslands and create an unmistakable African safari landscape. The combination of open plains, acacia woodland, seasonal swamps, river valleys, and towering baobabs provides constantly changing scenery throughout a game drive. Tarangire is especially rewarding during the dry season, when wildlife gathers around water and the landscape creates excellent visibility. However, the greener months can also offer beautiful scenery, abundant birdlife, and fewer visitors. Whether you're looking for elephants, dramatic landscapes, photography opportunities, or a quieter safari experience, Tarangire is a memorable destination and an important part of the northern Tanzania safari circuit.
